In hypothyroidism, these processes slow down, leading to dry, rough, or thickened skin; brittle nails that break or peel easily; and wounds or minor skin irritations that take longer than expected to heal.
These skin changes are subtle and gradual enough that most people chalk them up to weather, aging, or not drinking enough water. But when they appear alongside other thyroid symptoms, they form part of a recognizable pattern.
Digestive Slowdown and Constipation
The speed at which food moves through the digestive tract, known as gut motility, is directly regulated by thyroid hormones. In hypothyroidism, gut motility slows, leading to constipation, bloating, and a general sense of digestive heaviness even without significant dietary changes.
This symptom is particularly worth noting in the context of IBS because thyroid-related constipation is sometimes misdiagnosed as IBS-C, and treating the bowel symptoms without addressing the thyroid dysfunction produces limited results.
Changes in Heart Rate and Palpitations
The thyroid has a powerful effect on cardiovascular function. The Diagnostic Gap: Why "Normal" Doesn't Always Mean Optimal

Standard thyroid screening tests, such as TSH, sometimes also free T4, and uses a reference range based on population averages. But those ranges are broad, and where you fall within them matters enormously. A TSH of 0.5 and a TSH of 4.5 are both "normal" by most lab standards, but they represent very different thyroid activity levels and very different symptom profiles for many patients.
